For the past couple of weeks I have been very fortunate to be interning at Kabam game studios. I have been learning a tone and there are some of the radest dudes on the art team. All of these guys have been super giving of there time and I can not wait to learn more.

These are some pieces done for the witches house from the "Hansel and Gretel" story. I decided not to take the traditional candy house route. I thought instead to have a happy house in front and a death pit in the back; symbolizing the two faces of the the witch whom lives here.

These Paints were a struggle, perspective and color wise. But I learned so much in the importance of filling space for believability. The top piece is my most successful, I may go back and fix the color issues at some point. Thanks for watching!

Book Cover

This is a cover design for the classic novel "The count of Monte Cristo," by Alexander Dumas. The assignment was given to us by the famed Barron Story. I had a great deal of fun with some of the symbolism in the novel. It ultimately ended with this ghostly portrait of Albert De Morcerf (the son of the antagonist) If you see any (hidden symbols) leave a comment. Hint: "numbers."

Oil Shoes

Last spring I had the opportunity to paint with oils for the first time. (Thank you Joe and Kim) These were some of my final paintings. The first is a limited color study study of an old "Vans" shoe of mine. The second is the same shoe painted abstractly. Currently vans shoes have become very popular among the "Hip," but I have had a long relationship with the shoe. Having owned dozens of pairs since middle school and I wear them almost exclusively. Vans has always done a good job of keeping there image fresh yet still maintaing a classic aesthetic. The shoe has been a favorite among the alternative crowd: skateboarders, bikers, punk rock, lowbrow artists and graffiti artists. The alternative crowd, for me at least, are people stuck in complicated situations, internal or external, and are not understood by mainstream culture. These people are attempting to either explain or simplify their situation, in order to life fulfilling lives. This idea of simplifying (by which I mean being clear), in life and in art means a lot to me and something I am striving for.

Recent Sketch Work from this last spring. I felt good about these studies. I like the depth created when the surrounding objects are incorporated with the humans. I'm pushing for a sense of "moment" or a narrative in my pages. These are getting a bit closer to what I like.

Some recent sketchbook work. Lately with my work I am really tying to capture the spontaneity of my surroundings. I have then been incorporating this with images from my imagination. I am becoming less and less conservative with my drawings as my drafting skills improve, and this is making me very happy with the work.

A marketing major and c0-worker of mine needed some art for his final project. His groups idea was an online shoe company in which artist all over the world submit designs, they get voted on by users and the top designss are produced and sold. This is a quick idea I had and they chose mine for there mock commercial. Let me know what you guys think.

Giraffe

Here are some giraffe studies done at Oakland zoo this past semester. Oakland has a great Giraffe exhibit, the enclosure is pretty open with probably a dozen giraffes. On one sitting a young boy maybe around six years old runs up to the enclosure. He excitedly jumps up on the surrounding fence and blurts out the most honest observation of a giraffe. The boy says "They are like really big Goats." He is absolutely right, think about it.

Animation Sketchbook: real corn!

At the beginning of the semester we were assigned to make a short animation in one week. The short was 100% up to us as far as story, process and medium. Overall the class had some great shorts. So here is mine with a can of corn!

Forests?

These are my forest paintings from intermediate project. All three were based off of Shakespearian plays. The top is a "Midsummer Nights dream," the middle is Burnam wood from "McBeth" and the bottom is Arden wood from "As You Like It." Though there are some issues with the atmospheric perspective and the "realistic quality," overall I was pleased. I felt very strong about their designs but I would of really like to of pushed the lighting more. The floating Island was inspired by an english artist Roger Dean, not by James Cameron as some might suspect.

Last day equals Figure painting. This was my second go at figure painting, we wont talk about the first. For the first time I really felt loose in my color use. I feel like I can really start pushing color more comfortably in my next studies. Also a big thank you to Nikita for organizing such a great week.

And on the third day.... We have the lovely Sara and Colin. It was Sara's first go at modeling and yet she showed no sign of it. Today had to be one of the most enjoyable days so far. Sara and Colin worked so well together, they had great staging and were extremely inventive. Plus Colin has a very attractive haircut!

Day three a was musical of drawing. Our Model played the saxophone, trombone and the clarinet while on stage. All in all I really like what came out today, my favorite of the marathon so far. I really enjoy drawing bold and direct lately.

All week long with the SHM, we have figure drawing marathon. We get a chance to spend 4 hours everyday with great models, and some are going to be in pretty costumes oooohh! I'll try to post a my favorites from each day.

Here is my sack pantomime final for 114. 114 Had to be one of the greatest experiences of my life, great classmates and great instruction. coincidentally I was able to use a painting from another class as a background.

The Cult 28 Hella Tight Christmas Exchange

This last weekend a group of us wacky art students decided to have a art exchange. We drew names and then made a painting for that friend. It was such a good time and there were some really cool paintings. The name I drew was a really good friend, Peter Miller, (See Blog Link on Right) after some struggle I made this piece. I had so much fun with it that I am going to repeat my process a couple more times to see what I get.

This past semester we made many great drawing trips to the oakland zoo. Drawing Tigers was incredibly rewarding. Drawing from life really pushed me to develop a confident gesture and a better eye for observation. They are such an incredible animal and their beauty blew me away with every drawing

I Finally had a chance to get this piece scanned in. The great Tim Tang (See Side Bar Link) and I painted this over the summer. It was shown in an Urban art show this last september. It was such a pleasure doing a collaboration with a more skilled artist. Tim taught me so much on the handling of acrylic and developing that risk taking attitude with art.

Animation?

In our 114 animation class we were given the assignment to complete a walk animation. It had to be at least two steps and have character. My character is running from danger, across some river stones. I do not consider myself an animator but I am really starting to enjoy the process. Who knows maybe i'll change my mind.

Nature!

These are the nature studies I completed in preparation for my intermediate project. The great part about doing these small studies, was not only The paint mileage but I also found myself falling in love with nature. The top is an acorn, then a twig from an oak tree,and the last is from an unknown tree outside of the art building.

San Jose Chalk Fest!

The very talented Jessi Enguerra and I completed this chalk piece for a local San Jose Chalk festival. I had such a great time. It was both our first time with the medium, also to use it on the sidewalk and at a large scale (8'X8'). The piece took us around 10 hours and I think it fares well. As you can see we did this for our place of employment, Trader Joe's. We are both sign artist at the greatest store ever #212 San Jose on Coleman ave.

Arcade + Gunin

A good friend of mine and fellow SHM Tim Tang, and I completed this piece together (the painting in between the both of us) over the summer. It was such a great experience not only in painting and composition but also in teamwork. Working with someone else and complete a single creation that stays true to both of our visions was an awesome learning experience. Sub-Zero

Some fellow SHM peeps and I attended the Sub-Zero fest this last june. Pictured in order Tim Tang, two yellow girls, Myself, Kristina Wayte, a hairy man, two more people and Jerome Hardcore.(You can find links to there blogs on the right) We saw a tone of rad art and people. Also had a chance to get some sketching done. The local magazine "Content" caught us and posted us on there site. Color Rendering

Here is my final fro 113A with Cameron Chun. I started with a limited neutralized palette but added some colors in attempt to get a certain feel. I really wanted it to feel dirty and grungy, I am pretty happy with my process though not completely happy with the outcome. I am going to work on it some more over the summer to fix some areas especially the shapes in the fat. I want to sent it to Sir Chuck himself so it must be perfect I gained so much knowledge about color and lighting and it totally pumped me up for painting over the summer! Just paint!

Finished My Black and white acrylic rendering for 113A. I learned so much from this painting and I feel really good being that it was my first time really using acrylic paint. Really putting the time into such work really pays off, not only in the actual work but personally. After this painting I really feel ready for the demand of the SJSU A/I program!

As most student of this project know, it takes a while. I can actually say that I loved doing this drawing even though it did not fulfill my personal goals. I can also proudly say that I pulled the most all-nighters for this drawing! Also the photo was taken from my phone so it will be replaced with a better version! So enjoy!
